Origins. The sign of the cross was originally made in some parts of the Christian world with the right-hand thumb across the forehead only. In other parts of the early Christian world it was done with the whole hand or with two fingers. Around the year in Carthage (modern Tunisia, Africa), Tertullian wrote: "We Christians wear out our foreheads with the sign of the cross.".   To her, Melania & Me, the book she’s written about the formation and collapse of her relationship with the First Lady, is an odd but compelling cross of two stories: a female friendship gone.

The Station of the Cross is a prayer devotion that’s popular during Lent. Throughout this season, we seek to walk with Jesus toward His cross. Praying the Stations of the Cross every Friday, or even daily, can help us to enter into His pain and sorrow and fully appreciate the events of Easter weekend. 2 days ago  Diane Cole is book columnist for the Psychotherapy Networker, and the author of the memoir “After Great Pain: A New Life Emerges.” Aug at AM EDT.

For the love of books: Mobile libraries around the world. This World Book Day, we meet the people behind mobile libraries serving communities from Nigeria to the Netherlands. The refrain of this hymn echoes the words of the apostle Paul, “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians ESV) The stanzas are a prayer that the Christian would always remember the redemptive work of Christ on the cross, and live faithfully in that memory.
